‘As part of my treatment I explored my role as a parent. I was taught how to communicate with my daughter and understand her feelings towards my addiction’.
‘I can’t remember the last time I felt safe – the Nelson Trust has helped me to find myself’.

Recent Developments

The Nelson Trust continues to flourish in the current downturn.  Over the last ten years our work has focused particularly on increasing overall capacity to meet the demand for treatment places, and providing specialist facilities and services to respond to the needs of the client group more specifically.

In addition to treatment innovations, the Trust’s Education, Training and Employment (ETE) and Resettlement programmes are now flourishing. Our Long term recovery rate for clients who attend these programmes during and after treatment is one of the highest in the country.

The Young People's Programme

The Children’s and Young People’s project is an integrated learning programme of education and therapy; an inclusive holistic approach designed to help young people put their drug and alcohol problems behind them and take control of their lives. More info

The Women’s Treatment Service

In 2004 we opened a high support accommodation facility to treat women who come to us having suffered domestic violence and abuse and are therefore better suited to a single gender programme. With the help of the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation and the Pilgrim Trust, among others, we set up a dedicated treatment service in 2005. Now the demand for places in the Women's House is so high that we are looking for larger premises. We want to expand the number of places available and increase supervised, residential provision for children to visit their parents. Barnardo's are providing 'Family Conferencing' for the children of service users to ensure they are properly looked after by their families and not taken into care. More info

Education, Training and Employment (ETE) centre

Set up in 2003, the Centre has achieved outstanding success in reinforcing the treatment, support and rehabilitation of service users by building self-confidence through achievement. Each user is given individual information, advice and guidance on learning, voluntary work and careers by IAG qualified staff. Adult Education courses in English, Maths and IT are available on site and clients are encouraged to gain recognised qualifications. There are courses to encourage practical skills and creativity, life skills and outward bound activities. Work experience is gained through volunteering with a range of local organisations. Resettlement support gives help with finding housing, training and jobs. More info

Sport and Leisure programme

Indoor and outdoor sports and leisure activities are available on a regular basis. Activities include: pool, table tennis, darts, football, swimming, netball, badminton, squash and rounders.

We are always in need of funding to develop these programmes further or provide courses and materials. If you would like to make a donation towards one of these developments click here or phone the fundraising office on 01453 889750.
