Woodwork at Nelson Trust

Woodwork Nelson Trust woodwork team tailor make furniture in support of local project.

The Nelson Trust woodwork team have been given the chance to show off their craftsmanship skills by producing tailor made furniture for a local housing and support centre.

Stroud Beresford Group, which consists of 2 housing and support centres for women and children affected by domestic abuse based in central Stroud, needed help with a development project at one of their houses.  Amy, a Project Worker with SBG, raised enough funds with the help of a grant from Zurich Cares to refurbish the play/dining room in one of their houses.

Amy said ‘combining a play space and a dining area in one room was a challenge and I decided that a purpose built breakfast bar and children sized table and chairs was the way forward’.  Stroud Beresford Group have previously worked with The Nelson Trust, and knew that they had a Training and Education centre which includes a carpentry suite.  Amy met with Chris Thompson (Furniture by Design) from the woodwork department at Nelson Trust and devised a schedule for the service users from The Nelson Trust to make the pieces that were needed and then to install them when they were finished.

Amy added ‘The quality and craftsmanship of the work is amazing and the room, which is now in use, has been a roaring success with the children and their mothers.  I think that the whole project has been a great success from beginning to end and I have enjoyed working with Nelson Trust - a big thank you to all who contributed to the project from a very happy and satisfied Beresford Group’.

Toni Cooper, Education, Training and Employment Team Leader at Nelson Trust said ‘many of the services users are extremely creative and finding something in life that interests them plays a huge part in the recovery process’.
