1st Glos Recovery Walk - Success

Aug 8 2013

On Sunday 8th September over 100 people joined together for the First Gloucestershire Recovery walk to celebrate recovery and show their support. Walkers included those in recovery, their children, family members and partners, Professionals and a couple who lost their son to addiction before he had an opportunity to access recovery.

The walk was an event which hoped to raise public awareness of the potential of recovery, rather than focus on the negative aspects of addiction. It was also an opportunity for those new to recovery to see that they are part of a large community of many individuals who have moved forward with their lives in different ways.

The walk followed the canal path from Brimscombe to Stroud and then continued down the High Street led by children carrying balloons which said ‘Recovery Changed our Lives’. At Stratford Park, Jazz Friday, a local Jazz band played whilst people enjoyed their picnics on the grass, bringing a party feel to the event.

It was incredible to see the support from the community and those who travelled to attend the event. Special thanks goes to Richard Maunders from the UK Recovery Federation for joining us and speaking in the park about other similar events which are happening across the country as part of Recovery Month.
