As an organisation dedicated to supporting women in the community, delivered by a team of inspiring women through our women’s centres and gender specific programmes, International Women’s Day is one of our largest events in the calendar.
As an organisation dedicated to supporting women in the community, delivered by a team of inspiring women through our women’s centres and gender specific programmes, International Women’s Day is one of our largest events in the calendar.
This year, our teams across the organisation took part in a wide range of activities to celebrate the day.
In Newport, the centre hosted an art mural workshop in collaboration with the Royal Foundation’s charity, Homewards, where individual community members from various local Newport services collaborated on creating a mural that represents their journey. The mural will be free to visit later in the year at Kingsway Shopping Centre in Newport, courtesy of a local artist.
In Bristol, the team hosted ‘The Journey To Work’ workshop alongside Women’s Work Lab and Amey, with Amey sharing expertise and guidance of a career in engineering, with a career panel, CV crafting, and rehearsing interview techniques. The team also attended the popular International Women’s Day event at Bristol City Council’s historic City Hall building, where they had an open stall for people to find out more about our services and hosted a workshop focusing on why women’s centres work.
In Swindon, our women’s centre hosted an afternoon tea, featuring plenty of sandwiches, cups of tea, and customary cakes. Our Gloucester Women’s Centre hosted a day of arts and crafts sessions focusing on messages of hope and positivity with cupcake decorating to unwind and connect with the women.
Our Hub Academy and Residential Treatment Centres hosted a day all about women’s empowerment, with a workshop celebrating the women that are influential in their lives, finishing off with an all-female panel of speakers. As well as an incredible-looking fruit platter and buffet, and donations of body sprays courtesy of Beauty Banks.
In Somerset, our Service Leads Gemma and Lorna, received a special shoutout from local Bridgwater MP Ashley Fox in his International Women’s Day speech in Parliament, recognising the support our centre offers across Somerset. Fox stated: “For International Women’s Day, I have the privilege of recognising some incredible women from our constituency in Parliament… Gemma Berry and Lorna Griffiths – leading the way at Nelson Trust Somerset Women’s Centre, which has supported over 5,000 women in need.”
Lets continue celebrating women everyday!
