Rise

What is Rise?

Rise is a voluntary programme in Somerset designed to support women who have experienced children being removed from their care.

Rise gives women the opportunity to take control of their lives and break free from deeply challenging cycles. We support women in making an informed choice about contraception, so they can take a pause in pregnancy for the programme duration.

How can Rise help?

Rise helps women in Somerset:

  • Access the right benefits
  • Budget money and manage debts
  • Find longer term accommodation
  • Improve relationships
  • Build confidence and skills
  • Talk about difficult feelings, including being a mother and the loss of their children
  • Set up letterbox contact and attend meetings
  • Have fun and build new relationships
  • Access other services to meet needs

How we work

One to one

Rise is based at our women’s centre in Bridgwater. However, practitioners work across all of Somerset and can meet wherever is the most comfortable. Sometimes, we work in group settings, encountering other women and practitioners is common. Differences in views may arise, but kindness towards others is encouraged. During conversations with practitioners, goals are identified and help in accessing additional services and attending appointments will be provided.

Essential Criteria

Each woman must meet the following criteria to be eligible for Rise:

  • She must be of childbearing age and live in Somerset
  • Has not had permanent contraception (sterilisation)
  • She has had one or more children removed from her care, the last being within the last 5 years
  • She is not pregnant and does not currently have children in her care

Every woman is unique

Everyone is different and our work is tailored to each individuals needs and goals. Supported by a practitioner for 18 months, dedicated time is spent getting to know each client.

Time to reflect

Rise works best when a woman does not have any children in her care and is not pregnant. This allows her, perhaps for the first time, to focus on herself and her own needs.

Pause from pregnancy

It’s important, but not essential, for women to be on a form of contraception during the programme, such as; implant, injection, or IUD/IUS (coil). We’ll work with women to find the contraception that suits them best.
