The Domestic Abuse Safe Leave Bill

Around 2.1 million people in the UK experience domestic abuse, with a woman killed by a partner or ex-partner every week. Support for victims and survivors should be accessible throughout the UK and within all communities.

As an organisation dedicated to supporting individuals experiencing domestic abuse, we witness firsthand the complexities of escaping, staying safe, and rebuilding life after trauma. This is why we welcome Gloucester MP Alex McIntyre’s proposal of the Domestic Abuse (Safe Leave) Bill.

The Safe Leave Bill recognises the urgent need for workplace support for victims fleeing abusive relationships. The Bill proposes 10 days of paid leave for survivors to secure safe accommodation, attend police interviews, manage medical concerns, and attend appointments. Currently, there are no provisions in place for survivors in the workplace, leaving them at risk of losing their jobs due to absences.

With a Bill like this in place, the UK will set an example of how domestic violence is a national emergency that our society needs to tackle with compassion and support for victims and survivors.
