Family Focus
What is Family Focus?
Based at The Nelson Trust Gloucester Women’s Centre and across Gloucestershire, the Family Focus team is made up of practitioners who specialise in a range of therapeutic approaches. They support women and their families who have experienced trauma as a result of drug and alcohol use.
As part of the Via recovery service contract, the Family Focus team works with women at the point of referral who are actively engaging in recovery, as well as those who are waiting to begin their recovery journey.
The team offers creative therapy for children and young people, as well as family therapy, in-person support groups at the women’s centre, and online group sessions for family members of loved ones in recovery.
The Family Focus service is dedicated to helping clients and their families understand substance misuse and trauma, rebuild relationships, and make lasting change possible.

How we work
Creative therapy
For many children, it can be difficult to express how they feel through words. Creative therapy, led by an experienced therapist, uses play and creativity to help children process and communicate their thoughts and feelings. It can help to make the shift from expressing trauma through challenging or withdrawn behaviours, to healthy communication with a trusted adult.
Family therapy
An experienced Family Therapist offers sessions for families and couples that explores relationships in a safe, supportive and non-judgmental space. They focus on improving and repairing relationships and bonds, building strengths and discovering patterns that may get in the way.
A positive way forward
Sessions with the Family Focus team are centred around celebrating success, which can promote a more positive mindset within the family. This strengthens their resilience by encouraging them to reflect on and draw from positive experiences, rather than focusing on negative ones.
